Handcrafted and tailor made tiles
We have picked up a strong trend on bathroom finishes focusing on the unique combination of contemporary and organic styles. This creates a dynamic feel with the juxtaposition of synthetic materials, such as a resin composite bath, combined with wood and the glossiness of tiles. Handcrafted and tailor made tiles have become a huge feature in current design.
At this year’s Cersaie tile exhibition in Bologna, the main theme is based on brand new hand made collections.
During my recent visit to Austria I was able to visit Karak tiles and met with Thomas, one of the partners. Their workshop is in the beautiful small town of Schlins and located in a unique building designed by Martin Rauch, well known for his clay architecture .
A kitchen we are installing in Fish Hoek in November will feature Karak handcrafted tiles as its splash back. It will be our first project with this company in Africa which is so exciting!
We have put a collection together of our favourite local ceramic artists who produce handcrafted tiles. The South African ceramic industry is world class and we are proud to show you a collection of their work.
