It was a real honour to work in the beautiful surroundings of the De Grendel Estate and to work closely with our clients on two bathroom projects in this heritage building.

Our client has a very good eye for design and knew what she wanted, and how it would work within the existing spaces.

The boy’s bathroom was originally a bathroom and a guest loo, and these spaces were a little dark and unwelcoming and so they weren’t being used much. We therefore demolished the separating wall to create one large open space which also balanced the proportions of the existing windows.

The vanity and matching mirror cabinet were existing pieces which our client asked us to incorporate. We added the traditional looking heated towel rails from Victorian Bathrooms.

We custom cut the Volakas marble tiles to create a herringbone pattern for the floor and worked with ceramic skirting tiles and feature dado tiles in combination with flat Metro tiles for the walls. The shower floor up-stand is finished with marble ledges which add an opulent detail and we repeated this detail for the shower seat.

We also enlarged House De Grendel’s main en-suite by including a neighbouring guest bathroom. In this way we were able to create a lavish space to incorporate new wardrobe cupboards so that this area could function as a dressing room as well. Again, we worked with the existing proportions of the beautiful sash windows and placed the Aurelius bath from Boutique Baths in the centre between these. The shower walls are clad in custom-cut marble slabs with Cape Dutch inspired gabled curves, and the shower up-stand is clad with solid ledges of marble to create a hand-crafted finish.

The bidet and toilet are combined in the SensoWash toilet by Duravit, which is both space saving and a “pioneering innovation in the world of shower-toilets”. The bespoke designed vanity unit with under slung basins allow ample space to place soap dishes. Again, the marble splash back was carefully considered, and we mirrored the marble cladding in the shower here as well.

The taps we used in both bathrooms are from the Montreux Range by Axor, which we felt would complement the heritage of this home as their design reflects an era of opulence immortalised in Europe’s grand hotels.
