This two-bedroom top-floor apartment in Tamboerskloof originally had one bathroom off the passage with a raised floor and a sliding door, along with a separate toilet. We redesigned the bathroom to include a large shower by demolishing the wall separating these spaces. Throughout the process, we consulted with engineers and obtained agreement from the body corporate to proceed with the renovations.
We removed the existing raised bathroom floor and fitted a new hinged door, as well as closing off the wall of the old toilet area. Additional storage was essential, but not so much that we encroached on functional spaces. The unique vanity with a step-back design provides extra hidden storage as well as a larger surface area.
Layered lighting from various light sources was crucial due to the existing slab ceiling, hence the use of surface-mounted lighting fixtures. The custom-made backlit feature mirror with warm LED lights offsets the linear shape of the mirror cabinet, with its curves adding a pleasing contrast.
We like working with a variety of materials to create a bespoke bathroom. For the Apartment Swart bathroom, we used Niemann Yosemite board for the floating vanity, with half-cup cabinet handles to tie the kitchen and bathroom design together. The Kora Sand Kozy fluted wood-look shower tiles beautifully reflect the natural light from the bathroom window.
The on-top basin and wall-hung toilet are from Duravit, and the taps are from the Meir range. Keeping things cozy, the heated towel rail is from Jeeves.
